These Detroit women are fighting to get thousands of rape kits tested
In 2009, Kym L. Worthy, head of the prosecutor’s office in Wayne County, Michigan, discovered more than 11,000 untested rape kits in a Detroit Police Department storage facility. She was determined to test them all, but learned it would cost $27M to do so. Not dismayed, she started fundraising — but after five years only raised enough to have 2,000 kits tested. But then her efforts began to attract the attention of powerful members in the Detroit business community — particularly female entrepreneurs.
